Forbidden City, USA: Chinatown Nighclubs, 1936-1970

In 1998, filmmaker Arthur Dong produced and directed a documentary titled Forbidden City, USA. This 2015 publication about Chinatown nighclubs from 1936-1970 is a compilation of the interviews derived from the film plus his personal collection of ephemera from that era. "Winner of the 2015 American Book Award, Forbidden City, USA captures the magic and glamour of the Chinatown nightclub scene, which peaked in San Francisco during World War II. In the 1930s and ’40s, audiences flocked to nightclubs to escape the problems of the day with a cocktail and a show." As book designer, I was instrumental in developing the book's visual structure and managing the project from inception to completion.
